Shaw : The No. 1 distributor of Worldwide Independent Films in Singapore

Today, Shaw is the No.1 distributor of worldwide independent films in Singapore - representing companies like Focus Features, Summit Entertainment, Initial Entertainment Group, Handmade Films, Odyssey Entertainment, Lions Gate International, Seven Arts, Crystal Sky and Media 8. Shaw is also the largest distributor of Chinese films and the representative of Hong Kong film giant Media Asia. At any one time, audiences at Shaw cinemas can enjoy independent films of any language, of all genres.

With an extensive network of screens available to Shaw, both narrow-release arthouse films and wide-release blockbusters are able to achieve maximum exposure islandwide.

Between 2005 to the first half of 2008, Shaw released over 230 films with bigger films commanding over twenty screens each. These include commercial films like Rogue Assassin, P.S. I Love You, Balls of Fury, Step Up 2, The Saw trilogy, The Resident Evil trilogy, Nim's Island and Bangkok Dangerous. No stranger to the Oscars when award season rolls around, Shaw distributes by far the largest number of Oscar nominated / winning titles like Babel, Brokeback Mountain, Million Dollar Baby, The Constant Gardener, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, Volver, Lost In Translation and Eastern Promises. Shaw is also the biggest distributor of the best of Asian cinema, having released over the past few years films like Jackie Chan's Rob-B-Hood, the Infernal Affairs series, The Banquet, Perhaps Love, Three Kingdoms and Warlords.


Shaw Studios, Tseung Kwan O

In August 1998, Shaw Brothers (HK) Ltd led a consortium, The Hong Kong Movie City Company Ltd in a winning bid to build new movie studios in Hong Kong with Shaw itself taking a 35% stake in the venture. During construction, the entire project was expanded from 300,000 sq ft to 523,000 sq ft with a total gross floor area of 1.1 million sq ft. This pushed the project budget up to US$180 mil. By March 2002, the consortium dissolved but Shaw Brothers (HK) persevered. The Hong Kong Movie City project was renamed Shaw Studios with Shaw taking a 95% interest and China Star the remaining 5%. Construction commenced in the fall of 2002.

Located 25 minutes from Central in Tseung Kwan O, the new Shaw Studios aims to be opeational by the first half of 2007.

The studios boasts one of the largest, fully air-conditioned and sound and vibration-insulated soundstages in Asia, a full-service color lab and digital imaging facility, over 20 sound and editing suites, a 400-seat dubbing and screening theatre, executive and production office space, banqueting facilities, and visual effects and animation capabilities. In all, over a million square feet of digitally-wired and secure facilities dedicated solely to film production and post-production.
