Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX completes the Singapore cinematic landscape
  • Shaw Theatres brings you the world’s most immersive movie experience with IMAX’s Digital Theatre System
  • Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX first to screen IMAX 3D blockbusters in Singapore and will open with Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Singapore, 3 May 2011 - After a seven-month and S$20 million “re-imagining”, Shaw’s iconic Lido Theatres will reopen its doors to the public with brand new offerings: a total of 11 halls including one featuring Singapore’s first and only IMAX’s Digital Theatre System!

The 10 regular halls will open on 5 May 2011, and Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX will open on 19 May 2011 with Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (An IMAX 3D Experience) leading celebrations of this milestone for Shaw Theatres and the Singapore cinematic industry.

Mr. Mark Shaw, Executive Vice President of Operations, Shaw Theatres, said: “We want to create and champion change in the movie-going landscape in Singapore. We were first to introduce premium cinema-going to a suburban district with premiere at Shaw Theatres nex, and now we are bringing consumers the ultimate cinema experience with IMAX’s Digital Theatre System.

We have successfully upped the ante on both quality and options in cinema entertainment here in Singapore. In addition to the new IMAX screen, the 10 regular halls have been redesigned and refitted to Shaw Theatres’ new standards of comfort and quality. We have created three new halls and improved ergonomics for all the halls for an even better cinematic experience.”

Mr. Don Savant, Managing Director, Asia Pacific IMAX, commented on IMAX’s partnership with Shaw Theatres: “Shaw Theatres has been a pioneer in entertainment and cinema in Singapore. Shaw Theatres Lido was the perfect location for IMAX with its timely renovation and iconic location on Orchard Road in the heart of Singapore’s shopping belt. IMAX’s awe inspiring cinema experiences with blockbusters from Hollywood and Chinese film makers will provide movie buffs a super premium movie experience they will not see at other cinemas or in their homes.”

Mr. Brett D. Hogg, Vice President and Managing Director for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, said: “Shaw Theatres’ decision to bring in IMAX’s Digital Theatre System has definitely generated much excitement for both consumers and the cinematic industry as a whole. Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX will provide an added dimension and avenue for us to showcase great movies in Singapore."

Mr. Christopher Shaw, Executive Vice President of Film Distribution, added: “With Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX, we are able to expand the breadth and depth of our engagement with our movie distribution partners – and offer variety to consumers for any single movie title with 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. The renewing of Lido also marks a significant step in our larger strategy of rebranding our cinemas and properties, and to leverage on our 80 years of experience in providing for the ever-changing needs of our customers.”

Following Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the public can expect an exciting line-up of Hollywood’s new releases as well as blockbusters that have been digitally re-mastered and released in both IMAX’s 2D and 3D formats at Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX. They include Kung Fu Panda 2 (An IMAX 3D Experience), Super 8 (The IMAX Experience), Transformers: Dark Of The Moon (An IMAX 3D Experience) and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (An IMAX 3D Experience).

Tickets for IMAX 2D format movies are priced at S$20 and S$17 respectively for peak and off-peak hours.

Tickets for IMAX 3D format movies are priced at S$22 and S$19 respectively for peak and off-peak hours. Shaw Theatres will be offering concessions for senior citizens and children under 13 years old, and will be introducing family packages as well (terms and conditions apply and do visit www.shaw.sg for details). Shaw Theatres LIDO IMAX has a seating capacity of 421 and 319 for 2D and 3D movies respectively. Figueras’ top range Megaseats are featured in the hall.

The IMAX Experience
Virtually all aspects of the IMAX's Digital Theatre System have been customised to deliver The IMAX Experience – from the design of the cinema hall to the projectors, speakers, screen and even the port hole glass, to the creation of movie content. Every aspect is carefully looked into to give the movie audience the most immersive experience possible.

For a start, IMAX’s projection technology delivers crystal-clear images. The dual projection system projects left-eye and right-eye images simultaneously thus eliminating depth distortion during fast-moving scenes. 4 IMAX’s audio system delivers laser-aligned digital sound. Each IMAX theatre is acoustically treated to present accurate and realistic sound images with the largest dynamic range. This enables the sound to be

crisp enough to hear a pin drop and precise enough to know exactly where it dropped!

Then there is IMAX’s customised theatre geometry, which maximises your field of view. The high-gain screen results in exceptionally bright images and unparalleled 3D effect. The screen is also slightly curved and sits closer to the audience, creating a larger effective screen, which is equivalent to a 20% to 230% increased in screen area.
